How to download an Instagram Reel
Reels and video posts from public accounts. Portrait stays portrait — the full vertical frame, no letterboxing and no watermark added by us.
Instagram's own Download button, and when it isn't enough
For public Reels, Instagram offers its own download: tap Share, then Download. It's quick, but the saved video carries an Instagram watermark with the creator's username, and the option only appears when the creator allows downloads.
Downloading here gives you the video file Instagram stored, with no watermark added by us. If a creator has switched downloads off, take that as their answer and ask before reusing their work — what you may legally keep covers the ground rules.
Reels, video posts and IGTV links
Instagram uses a few link shapes for video, and all of them work:
- instagram.com/reel/… — a Reel
- instagram.com/reels/… — the same Reel, as the Reels tab links it
- instagram.com/p/… — a feed post with a video in it
- instagram.com/tv/… — an older IGTV video
Why Instagram videos top out around 1080p
Instagram re-encodes every upload to its own settings — for Reels, roughly 1080 × 1920 at a bitrate chosen to stream well on phones. Whatever the creator filmed, even in 4K, what Instagram keeps is that re-encode, and it's the best copy anyone can download.

Vertical stays vertical
Reels are 9:16, feed videos are often 4:5, and older posts can be square or 16:9. Tools that force everything into a landscape frame either crop through the subject or add black bars. The file here keeps the frame the video was published in, so it plays full-screen on a phone and drops straight into vertical editing apps.
What doesn't work
A few kinds of Instagram content can't be downloaded here:
- Private accounts — if the post doesn't show in a logged-out browser, it can't be read.
- Stories, photo posts and carousels — not supported yet.
- Close Friends content, and anything behind a follow request.

Instagram downloader questions
Do I need to log in to Instagram?
No. Public Reels and video posts work without an account, and we never ask for your Instagram login.
Do private accounts work?
No. If the post isn't visible when logged out, it cannot be read — and we never ask you for Instagram credentials to work around that.
Can I download Stories or photos?
Not at the moment. Reels and video posts are supported; Stories, photo posts and carousels aren't.
Is a watermark added?
Not by us — you get the video Instagram stored. Instagram's own Download button is different: it adds a watermark with the creator's username.
What resolution do Reels come in?
Usually 1080 × 1920 at the bitrate Instagram re-encoded on upload. That re-encode is theirs; nothing can restore detail lost before publishing.
Can I take only the audio from a Reel?
Yes — the Audio tab lists the track on its own, which is useful for finding the original song or reusing your own voiceover.
