Why HDR videos look washed out — and how to fix it

Grey, flat colours on an HDR video almost always mean the screen or player isn't translating HDR for a normal display. Here's what's happening and what to do.

You download a video that looked vivid on YouTube, and on your laptop it plays dull and grey, as if someone turned the contrast down. The file isn't broken. It's an HDR video being shown on a screen or player that doesn't handle HDR properly.

What HDR is

HDR — high dynamic range — lets a video hold brighter highlights, deeper shadows and more saturated colours than standard video (SDR). On an HDR-capable screen, sunlight on water can glare while a shadowed face keeps its detail.

To do that, HDR uses a different way of encoding brightness and a wider colour space. A screen or player that assumes it's receiving normal video misreads those values, and everything collapses towards the middle: grey blacks, dim highlights, pale colours.

Why it looks fine on YouTube but not in your player

When YouTube detects that your screen can't show HDR, it sends you a standard version, or converts the HDR version as it plays. That conversion is called tone mapping: squeezing HDR's wide range into what an ordinary screen can display, so it still looks natural.

A downloaded HDR file has no one doing that for it. Whether it looks right depends entirely on the player you open it in and on your screen.

Fix 1: play it in a player that tone-maps

VLC tone-maps HDR to a normal screen on most systems. If an HDR file looks washed out in your default player, try VLC first. On Windows, if VLC still looks wrong, its video output setting (under Tools › Preferences › Video) can make a difference — the default is usually the right choice.

On a Mac with an HDR-capable display, QuickTime Player and Safari show HDR correctly. On an iPhone or recent Android phone, the built-in photo and video apps generally handle it.

Fix 2: download the standard version instead

When a video has HDR versions, it usually has standard versions too. If you'll watch on an ordinary laptop, a projector or an older TV — or you're putting the clip into a presentation or an editor that doesn't handle HDR — the standard version is simply the safer file. Fix 3: check your display settings

On Windows, an HDR-capable monitor only shows HDR properly when HDR is switched on in Settings › System › Display. With it off, HDR video can look flat; with it on, ordinary windows can look slightly dim — that's normal, and there's a brightness balance slider for it.

If your screen isn't HDR-capable, no setting will make HDR look as intended. Tone-mapping in the player, or the standard version, is the answer.

Editing HDR footage

Many free and older editors don't understand HDR and will import it washed out. Either use an editor with HDR support and export deliberately to SDR, or start from the standard version of the video. Mixing HDR and SDR clips in one timeline without converting is a common source of mismatched colour.
