30fps vs 60fps: what frame rate actually changes
Frame rate decides how motion looks, not how sharp a still frame is. Here's when 60fps is worth the bigger file and when 30fps is the better pick.

Resolution gets the attention, but frame rate is the number that decides whether motion looks smooth, cinematic or slightly off. It's also easy to waste storage on: a 60fps file carries twice as many frames as a 30fps one.
What frame rate means
Video is a sequence of still images. Frame rate — frames per second, or fps — is how many of them play each second. The common rates each have a history:
- 24fps — the traditional film rate, still used for most movies and a lot of drama and music videos.
- 25fps and 50fps — broadcast television in Europe, India, Australia and other PAL regions.
- 30fps and 60fps — television in North America and Japan, and the default on most phones.
- 120fps and above — slow-motion capture, slowed down on playback.
What 60fps changes
At 60fps, each frame is on screen for about 17 milliseconds instead of 33, so movement between frames is smaller and fast action — a football crossing the frame, a game camera turning — looks fluid instead of juddery.
What it doesn't change is detail. A single frame from a 1080p60 video is no sharper than one from 1080p30. If a video looks soft, frame rate isn't the fix.
When 60fps is worth it
Higher frame rates earn their size on content that moves a lot:
- Gaming videos and screen recordings of fast-moving interfaces.
- Sport and action camera footage.
- Footage you plan to slow down in an editor — 60fps slows to half speed and still plays smoothly.
Talking heads, lectures, slideshows and most vlogs gain almost nothing from 60fps. Film-style content shot at 24fps shouldn't be converted to 60fps at all: the extra frames are invented, and the result can look like a soap opera.
What it costs in file size
Doubling the frames doesn't exactly double the file — modern codecs reuse information between neighbouring frames — but a 60fps version is still noticeably larger than the 30fps version at the same resolution. On YouTube, 60fps versions typically exist only for the higher resolutions of videos uploaded at 60fps.

Frame rate and your screen
Most phones, laptops and monitors refresh at least 60 times a second, so they can show 60fps properly. Some TVs smooth motion by inventing in-between frames — often called motion smoothing — which is why films can look strangely slick on them. That's a TV setting, not something in the file.
Which should you download?
