How to download a YouTube video
Watch links, youtu.be links and Shorts, from the paste to the finished file — and why some tools hand back silence.

Saving a YouTube video is three steps and one piece of knowledge. The steps take a few seconds; the knowledge is what stops you ending up with a file that plays without sound.
Copy any form of the link
The address bar on desktop, the share sheet on mobile, or a shortened youtu.be link — all three point at the same video and all three resolve. You do not need the video ID, and you never need to be signed in, because only public videos can be reached at all.
Read the quality list before you pick
Each rung shows its file size where YouTube reports one. That number is the honest signal: if the 2160p option is barely larger than the 1080p one, it is a thin 4K encode and the smaller file will look the same on any screen short of a television. Audio-only sits on its own tab when the sound is all you wanted.
Why the file arrives with sound
Above roughly 720p, YouTube stores video and audio as separate streams. Tools that grab only the video track produce a silent file — the single most common complaint about downloaders. The two streams are merged here before the file is handed over, so what you open plays complete.
